Betty Bivins Edwards grew up in Haddock, Georgia, a rural town in central Georgia. She studied mathematics and fine art at Georgia College and State University, fine art at Wesleyan College, and the history of Medieval art at Oxford University, Oxford, England.

Edwards taught math and art in the Georgia public school system and worked with Wesleyan College's Center for the Arts.  She has been a professional artist since 1981.

Edwards became interested in fiber arts while living in Mississippi. Her fiber sculptures gained a wide reputation and set the standard for work in the South. Her body of work offers a unique perspective on the Southern experience.

Edwards' works have traveled throughout the United States and Canada. She has been featured at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in New York, The White House in 1998, The Macintosh Gallery, Atlanta, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, and Ringling School of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida.

The paintings along with the fiber works are in numerous collections throughout the country. Her works are included in Savannah's Telfair Museum, Columbus Museum, Mercer University, Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences, State University of West Georgia, Life Insurance Company of Virginia, and King and Spalding, Atlanta.
